Kind and welcoming people
The region of Alentejo extends from the northern mountain ranges of the Algarve towards central Portugal and goes from the Atlantic Ocean to the Spanish border. However, although it is the largest region in Portugal, it is also the one with the lowest population density.
Considered one of Portugal’s hidden gems, and dubbed both the Provence and the Tuscany, here you can find rugged wild beaches (much sought-after by surfers), green plains, olive trees and picturesque towns full of history.
The interior Alentejo region is the hottest one, in summer it can hit an average daily temperature of 30ºC (it is common to have heatwaves, with temperatures reaching 40ºC). However, in the coast, thanks to the Atlantic breezes, the average daily temperature is 20ºC.
In the winter, the temperatures go from 14ºC to 5ºC and it is often raining. Sometimes, on the coldest winter days, temperatures can reach as low as 0ºC.
People say that life moves at a different pace in Alentejo, that everything is done calmy. In fact, Alentejanos (people from Alentejo) are known for their accent and the slow melody in which they speak. They are also kind and welcoming people.
So, if you seek tranquility, this is it: a peaceful area, where nature meets tradition.
Cante Alentejano (Alentejano Singing) is a genuine and unique musical expression in the world. Sung in chorus and without the use of musical instruments, it represents the everyday life in Alentejo. Its lyrics tell us stories about work in the fields, love and daily struggles to survive the land’s hardships.

Rich in flavors that are based on regional products, and with the wise hands of the people who have lived there for generations, the Alentejo cuisine is not only delicious but heart-warming.
Amongst the large variety of traditional dishes, the most known are the "açorda Alentejana” (bread stew/bread soup), the “migas” (crumbled bread), the lamb stew and the pork loin with clams.
