Natural Landmarks
As the name suggests, the Centro Region is a Portuguese region located in the center of the country - bordered to the north by the north region, to the northeast by the Spanish region of Castilla y León, to the southeast by the Spanish region of Estremadura, to the south by the Alentejo, to the southwest by the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.
With around 2,250,000 inhabitants, this is the third most populous region in Portugal, and the second largest. Its capital is the city of Coimbra, known as "the city of students".
As far as climate is concerned, the Centro Region is characterized by hot summers and rainy winters. The lowest temperatures occur in the mountains in the interior of the region and can reach -10 ºC.

Here you'll find historic cities (such as Coimbra, Viseu, Aveiro and Tomar), stunning natural areas (such as Serra da Estrela, Serra do Buçaco and the beaches of the Silver Coast) and some of Portugal's most historic villages, including Monsanto, considered "the most Portuguese village in Portugal".
The region is also very rich in popular festivities and traditions, such as the São Mateus Fair, held annually in August and September in Viseu, the medieval fair in Óbidos and the Carnival in Torres Vedras.
In central Portugal, the cuisine is also an attraction, with typical dishes and sweets "to eat and cry for more".
While the coast offers fresh seafood and fish, the interior offers the flavors of the mountains.
Don’t miss the codfish in the ‘ilhavenses’ restaurants, the famous suckling pig from Mealhada, the ‘chanfana de cabra’, the ‘ovos-moles’ from Aveiro and, of course... the incomparable Serra da Estrela cheese!
Gastronomy
The central region of Portugal is a treasure trove of historical and cultural wealth, and is home to historic cities and remarkable monuments. This is the case of the Monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha, the Convent of Christ in Tomar and the University of Coimbra, all recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
History
The central region of Portugal is a delight for nature lovers, offering a unique diversity to its visitors.
The region's natural landmarks are the Serra da Estrela (the largest and highest mountain range in mainland Portugal), the Serra do Buçaco, the River Mondego (the longest river located exclusively in Portuguese territory), the Figueira da Foz Lagoon, the Serra da Lousã and the beaches of the Silver Coast.
