As the name suggests, Norte is a Portuguese region located in the far north of the country - bordered to the north and east by Spain, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and to the south by the Central Region.

With around 3.6 million inhabitants, this is Portugal's most populous region and its capital is the charming city of Porto.

As far as climate is concerned, the Northern Region has diverse characteristics due to its vast geographical expanse. On the coast, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, the climate is more temperate, with mild winters and cool summers. Inland, winters tend to be harsh and summers quite hot.

The northern region of Portugal is known for its rich history and culture, as well as for its stunning natural scenery, with a color palette where shades of green and blue stand out.

Its territory is home to four main tourist destinations: Minho, Trás-os-Montes, Douro and Porto. From developed cities to mountain villages stuck in time, there are many options to explore in this beautiful region.

Northern cuisine is renowned for its rich and authentic flavours, always accompanied by good wine.
Here you'll find the traditional caldo verde soup, Portuguese stew, various cod recipes (such as à Zé do Pipo, à Braga and à Gomes de Sá), the famous francesinha and, of course... the incomparable Port wine!

The north of Portugal is known for its deep historical and cultural wealth. The region is home to centuries-old cities that played a pivotal role in the formation of the country, such as Porto, Arcos de Valvadez and Guimarães, considered the "Cradle of the Nation".

Filled with mountains, rivers and natural parks, the north of Portugal is the ideal place for nature tourism.
Among the region's highlights are the imposing Serra do Gerês and the Douro region, Portugal's largest wine producer.
