1 - A little about the history of Almancil...

The history of human occupation in the territory of Almancil (Loulé municipality) takes us back to the Paleolithic, with some archaeological remains dating from this period having been collected. However, it was during the Roman occupation that the region began to develop (and prosper).

The most important archaeological remains identified in the parish date from this period. In the São João da Venda area, for example, significant evidence of ceramic production has been found, namely around one hundred and fifty fragments of amphorae. With the fall of the Roman Empire, Almancil passed through various hands, including the Moors, who left a significant influence on local culture and architecture.

After the Christian reconquest, several hermitages and churches were built in the area, including the Ermida de S. Lourenço (now the Igreja Matriz de São Lourenço - one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in Portugal). For many years, Almancil remained a small farming village, with an economy based on agriculture and fishing. However, with the growth of tourism in the Algarve region from the 20th century onwards, Almancil experienced a major development.

What to see and do in Almancil?

With its world-renowned golf courses, Almancil is considered a paradise for golf enthusiasts. You can choose from the following golf courses in Almancil:

• North Course (Quinta do Lago);
• South Course (Quinta do Lago);
• Laranjal (Quinta do Lago);
• Ocean Golf Course (Vale do Lobo);
• Royal Golf Course (Vale do Lobo).

On Vale do Lobo you'll find one of Europe's most famous golf courses - hole 16, a demanding Par 3 on an imposing reddish cliff.

With more than 12km of blue flag beaches, the Almancil region is very popular with families with children. The town is mainly known for the beaches of Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago, but the beaches of Ancão and Garrão are equally fascinating. Praia do Ancão is popular with nature lovers, offering picturesque coastal trails, while Praia do Garrão stands out for its impressive cliffs.

On the banks of the Ria Formosa, in the Quinta do Lago area, is the São Lourenço Trail, one of the best paths for observing aquatic birds in the Algarve. The trail winds through marshes and freshwater lakes, with the highlight being the observatory at Lagoa de S. Lourenço, from where you can catch a glimpse of species such as the mallard and the fulica atra (among many others!). The lagoon is also a great place to spot species of terrapin native to Portugal, such as the emys orbicularis. If you're lucky, you may also spot the common chameleon, a reptile adapted to the Algarve's coastal pine forests. Unfortunately... it's becoming increasingly rare. The trail is pedestrian and cyclable, and the best time to visit is between September and May.

Once almost ruined and without doors, it was in 1722 that the tiny hermitage of São Lourenço was given a new lease of life. Legend has it that the local residents, desperate because of the lack of water, asked St. Lawrence for help, promising to build him a new church. When water was discovered near the small chapel, the faithful gathered their alms and began to rebuild it. Today, this is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful churches in the Algarve and stands out above all for its tile cladding, which depicts the life of the saint. There are eight panels of beautiful blue tiles that tell the story of the martyr, punished in Rome for dividing the church's gold among the poor. A classic work in the Portuguese Baroque style!

The menu includes Portuguese and international cuisine, from the traditional "Cataplana" to the exquisite Rack of Lamb and Chateaubriand. Pequeno Mundo (Small World) is a restaurant steeped in history and one of the great references in the Almancil region. In this iconic space, Sara Vilela continues the work of her father, Joaquim Vilela, paying harmonious homage to Portuguese and French cultures. Here you'll find dishes such as Veal Tenderloin with Mushrooms and Port Wine, Provençal Sea Bream Fillets and the delicious "Carabineiro". The restaurant also has an extensive wine cellar, which includes rare wines. A "Small World" that brings together the best of two big worlds!
