Before it became the vibrant tourist center it is today, Vilamoura went through a fascinating history dating back to the Roman Empire, and it is precisely in this region that one of the most extraordinary Roman finds in our territory - Cerro da Vila - can be found.

This archaeological site consists of the ruins of an ancient seaside villa built between 27 BC and 14 AD, made up of residential buildings with fountains, public and private baths, factories producing fish preparations and funerary monuments.

Later, this area was occupied by the Arabs, who gave it typical Islamic features.

However, the real transformation of Vilamoura began in the 1960s, when businessman Arthur Cupertino de Miranda saw the tourist potential of the region, at a time when tourism was taking its first steps in the Algarve.

So, in 1964 Arthur bought the old Quinta do Morgado de Quarteira, one of the largest and richest estates in the Algarve (1,600 hectares), and renamed it Vilamoura. The aim was to create the largest private tourist resort in Europe on the site.

The official opening of the Vilamoura marina in 1974 marked a crucial moment in the history of the development. The first boat to enter the marina was the Giralda, owned by His Royal Highness, the Count of Barcelona.

Subsequently, the construction of golf courses designed by renowned professionals such as Arnold Palmer and Frank Pennink transformed Vilamoura into a first-class golf destination.

Today, Vilamoura is characterized by offering visitors the cosmopolitan life typical of large tourist centers; full of luxury hotels, sophisticated restaurants, designer stores and a lively nightlife.

Considered one of the Algarve's main vacation destinations, with 3 km of soft, golden sandy beaches, Vilamoura attracts visitors from all over the world in search of sun, sea and leisure.

Further away from the center of Vilamoura, just a few minutes from "The Old Course", is the Oliveira Dourada restaurant.
