1 - A little about the history of Comporta...

The Comporta region is known for being an exclusive and luxurious tourist destination, but did you know that it was once a harsh, sandy desert inhabited by wild animals?

The history of Comporta takes us back to the 1st century BC, when the Roman population settled here. During this period, the area was known as "Portus Comportus" and served as an important commercial port.

The Romans took advantage of the area's natural resources, resulting from its proximity to the Sado river, to carry out commercial activities, which included salt production, fishing and agriculture.

During medieval times, Comporta was influenced by the Moors; and in the middle of the 13th century it was reconquered by the Christians - becoming part of the kingdom of Portugal.

In the following years, the region was shaped by agricultural activity, mainly rice production.

In the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, it became a strategic point for the arrival of slave ships. The slaves who landed here were sold at auctions to nearby landowners and forced to work on the rice plantations in precarious conditions. Fortunately, slavery was officially abolished in Portugal in 1869.

In the 20th century, Comporta attracted the attention of notable investors, notably the Espírito Santo family, who developed several tourism and real estate projects here. 

Comporta gained international prominence and today is considered a luxury haven, with white sandy beaches and extensive rice paddy landscapes that attract those seeking tranquillity and natural beauty.

What to see and do in Comporta

With long stretches of golden sand, wild dunes and crystal-clear waters, Comporta's beaches are truly magnificent.
Among them are Praia da Comporta, perfect for long walks by the sea; Praia do Carvalhal, known for its gentle waves and calm waters; and Praia do Pego, surrounded by dunes and lush vegetation.

Right in the center of the village of Comporta is the Casa da Cultura, a refurbished former rice barn with stands selling local handicrafts.

As well as handicrafts, you'll find clothes, exclusive bikinis, jewelry, homemade sweets, wines, olive oils and much more!

The Casa da Cultura also organizes 3 major events a year: the Spring Market, the week before Easter; the Summer Market, from June to September; and the Christmas Market, 2 weekends in November and December.

In the center of the village of Comporta is the São João restaurant, a must for traditional Portuguese food.

Alentejo cuisine is also very well represented here, from the bread that arrives at your table at the start of the meal to the delicious selection of desserts.

The Museu do Arroz da Comporta (Comporta Rice Museum) aims to consecrate rice-growing by revealing a little more of the region's tradition.

The museum houses a restaurant which, as you might expect, features rice as the main ingredient on its menu.

Typical Portuguese dishes include cod rice, duck rice and seafood rice. For starters, rice cakes; and for dessert, rice pudding.

A great option for lunch or dinner in Comporta!
