The construction of Avenida da Liberdade, located in the parish of Santo António, began around 140 years ago, after the destruction of Passeio Público, the garden that gave rise to this prestigious avenue.

Shortly after the 1755 earthquake, the Marquis of Pombal ordered the construction of the Passeio Público, a green leisure space where, despite its name (public sidewalk), only the highest members of society could circulate, and which was surrounded by walls and gates.

In 1821, with the country's liberal revolution, the barriers were destroyed and in 1879 Avenida da Liberdade was born.

Built with inspiration from the Champs - Élysées, the famous Parisian avenue, Avenida da Liberdade is today one of Lisbon's main avenues and one of the most expensive in the world.

Synonymous with luxury and fashion, here you'll find world-famous brand stores, excellent restaurants, theaters and 5-star hotels.

Avenida da Liberdade is located between two important squares, Praça dos Restauradores and Praça do Marquês de Pombal. As you walk along it, through its beautiful gardens, you'll find fountains, statues and various monuments.
 

1.    Architecture on Avenida da Liberdade

The variety of architectural styles along the avenue is awe-inspiring: Art Nouveau buildings, now occupied by offices, hotels or shopping complexes; romantic palaces, such as the Conceição e Silva Palace; and, of course, the magnificent Portuguese sidewalk!

As you walk along it, you'll also find the Tivoli Theatre, in neoclassical style, which adds the glamorous aura of a Parisian boulevard to the avenue.

Avenida da Liberdade is one of the busiest areas in the city and benefits from constant policing, which makes it safe and peaceful. 

Avenida da Liberdade also has a privileged location, just a 15-minute walk from the Baixa Chiado and 17 minutes from the Amoreiras neighborhood.

It is also very well served by public transport. Along its 1.1km stretch, you'll find several bus stops and 3 metro stations: "Restauradores Station", "Avenida Station" and "Marquês de Pombal Station". 

It is also possible to travel by train from Rossio station, which is just a 5-minute walk away. The airport is a 20-minute drive away.

What to see and do on Avenida da Liberdade?

Covering 26 hectares, Parque Eduardo VII is the largest park in the center of Lisbon and a place with excellent panoramic views. On the west side of the park is the Estufa Fria, a space where you can contemplate plants from all over the world among lakes and waterfalls. On the east side, you'll find the Carlos Lopes Pavilion - when you pass by, stop to admire its façade which, through panels of blue and white tiles, depicts scenes from Portuguese history. Parque Eduardo VII also has a variety of statuary, a picnic area, kiosks, restaurants, sports facilities and a children's playground.
 

It opened its doors on Avenida da Liberdade in 1924 and is now a national cultural icon.

Initially designed as a space exclusively for the Seventh Art, today the Tivoli Theatre has a varied program: plays, ballets, concerts, humor festivals and even television galas.

The São Jorge Cinema is one of Lisbon's most notable cinemas and has been open to the public since 1950.

Today, the cinema has 3 screens and is dedicated not only to showing films, but also to music and theater shows, exhibitions, workshops and themed meetings.

Just a 3m walk away and housed in a 19th century mansion, is the Cinemateca Portuguesa, a museum dedicated to the theme of cinema.

Inaugurated in the 1880s, the Ascensor do Lavra is the oldest funicular in Lisbon.

The elevator was created by Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, to help Lisboners get around the steepest streets in the so-called "city of seven hills".

Where to eat and drink:

Founded in 1925 by two elderly cooks from Minho, the restaurant called "Casa d'as Velhas" remains faithful to traditional Portuguese cuisine to this day. 

In memory of its origins, codfish "à minhota" is still one of the restaurant's most emblematic dishes.

Open to the public since 1947, Cervejaria Ribadouro is one of the capital's most emblematic breweries and a favorite spot for seafood lovers.

Ideal for a meal, a snack or simply an “imperial” (small beer) at the end of the afternoon.
