1 - A little about the history of Aroeira...

Aroeira is a charming, quiet village in the parish of Charneca de Caparica, whose history dates back to the Roman period.

Recognizing the potential of its fertile land, the Romans established rural villages here, making it an important agricultural and commercial center.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Aroeira maintained its strategic importance, especially due to its proximity to the River Tagus, with Setúbal as a valuable port - thus witnessing the development of fishing and maritime trade in the area.

However, the natural beauty of Aroeira has always been a constant, with extensive pine forest landscapes, and from the 20th century onwards, the area began to attract tourists looking for a refuge near the beach.

In the following years, the construction of tourist infrastructures contributed to the growth of tourism in the region. 

Today, Aroeira's golf courses are internationally renowned and welcome thousands of golf enthusiasts every year.

In addition, the famous Praia da Telha, located in the cove of the Medos National Forest, attracts bathers and surfers from all over the country.

What to see and do in Aroeira

About 20 kilometers long, Praia da Fonte da Telha is one of the largest beaches in the Lisbon region.

This beach is known for its scenic beauty and is surrounded by a nature reserve.

With its golden sands and crystal-clear waters, the place conveys a sense of peace and tranquillity to its visitors - making it a popular destination for both groups of young people and families with children.

The beach is also popular with water sports enthusiasts.

Fun Fact: Did you know that it was on this beach that, in 2018, Portuguese surfer Tiago Pires broke the world record for the biggest surf lesson in the world? That's right, 327 students attended this lesson.
 

Set in a protected pine forest, the Aroeira Golf Club is a true paradise for golf enthusiasts and has already won the hearts of players from all over the world.

The club is part of a complex called "Herdade da Aroeira" and has two internationally renowned golf courses: the Aroeira Pines Classic and the Aroeira Challenge, both of which are on Golf World magazine's list of the "best European courses".

To make golfers' experience more enjoyable and complete, Herdade da Aroeira offers a full range of services and facilities, from a clubhouse to a driving range and even a gym.

For those who wish to explore beyond the golf courses, the complex offers a variety of other activities, such as tennis, cycling and horse riding.

Classified as a Botanical Reserve in 1971, Mata dos Medos covers 340 hectares of fauna and flora and is a haven of choice for nature lovers.

The forest is located on the upper platform of the Costa da Caparica Fossil Cliff and offers visitors two walking trails. Along these, you can watch birds of prey flying over centuries-old trees.

At the end of the trails, towards the edge of the cliff, you'll see the immense panorama of the Atlantic. An image that will certainly make the walk worthwhile!

Tip: If you decide to venture into Mata dos Medos, stop by the Interpretation Center. Here, various environmental education activities take place, whether through guided tours, workshops or exhibitions.

Where to eat and drink:

Tradicional Aroeira is a family-run restaurant that is a must.

The food here is homemade and the options are very Portuguese! On Fridays, the house specialty is roast ham.

Anyone who has been there has been impressed by the friendliness of the staff - who are also part of the restaurant's brand image.

Tip: We advise you to make a reservation, as the establishment only opens at lunchtime and is usually very busy.

Golf d'Água is a sophisticated restaurant integrated into Herdade da Aroeira and is a reference in the area.

The restaurant has an indoor dining room, a space for events and a pleasant terrace, in a "chic" family atmosphere.

The menu is divided into two menus: the "Restaurant Menu", where you'll find meat and fish dishes, seafood and even pizzas; and the "Japanese Menu", which includes Carpaccios, Poke Bowls, Sushi Combinations and much more!

On summer evenings, Fridays and Saturdays are marked by DJ sessions and live acts.

Located on Fonte da Telha beach, the Aroeira Beach Bar promises you a special day in a unique space.

Here the dishes come straight from the sea to your table - sea bass, sea bream, salmon, sardines and much more! There's also plenty of variety on the menu: meat dishes, salads, pizzas and snacks. 

In addition, the establishment has a hat and tent dealer. The best part? You don't have to get up to get your favorite cocktail, the staff will bring it to you!
