On October 8th 2012, Portugal government passed a law enabling non-European citizens to invest in Portugal and gain residence permit, which is known as ‘Golden Visa’ Or GOLDEN RESIDENCY PERMIT.
Hit hard by the European banking crisis and the contraction of access to credit, Portuguese real estate market has experienced large declines, a lesser extent than its neighbor Spain. During the bubble of 2006, prices have indeed reached extreme height in Spain, which has never been the case in Portugal confirming a safer and more stable real estate market in Portugal.
In 2013 the Portuguese government publishes the law that created the Habitual Non-Resident Statute with the aim of capturing retirees from the European Union by offering "zero" taxation on pensions received for all new residents in Portugal.
